Black History Month October 2021

Posted on: 29/10/2021

This year’s Black History Month at MEA focused on our Academy and Trust wide focus on the importance of belonging.

Our assemblies this year focused on the national theme of Proud to Be, where we explored the importance of individual and collective identity. Our vision, ‘A Fantastic Future for All’ means that every student should be proud of who they are, their identity and their heritage.

Black History Month is celebrated each October in the UK and is an opportunity to reflect on how our nation has been enriched by those who have travelled here over centuries and have helped build a stronger society as a result of their contributions.

Black History Month provided a further opportunity for us to enjoy, educate and engage in interesting discussions, learn new knowledge and think about the world around us in different ways.

Across the academy reflected on why a strong sense of identity and belonging is important. We connected with our Trust school Chorlton High School South, sending video messages about the importance of BHM and had lots of opportunities as an Academy to engage in MEA Xtras linked to BHM 2021.

Outside of lessons in Digital Enterprise looking at the contributions of Anne Eastly, students were tasked with exploring their own heritage, as we work towards mapping out the diverse heritage of our students.

Students below were keen to get involved by recording short clips about what BHM means to them:
