To celebrate this year's See Myself in Books festival, Year 10 students at MEA were thrilled to welcome dub poet J. Chambers for an energetic and inspiring workshop exploring the power of spoken‑word poetry. Jay began the session by performing a selection of his own poems, giving students a firsthand experience of the rhythm, emotion, and storytelling behind dub poetry.
During the workshop, students created their own poems based on the theme of “home.” With Jay’s guidance, pupils produced thoughtful and expressive pieces, many of which they confidently shared with the group. The session gave students a new way to explore identity, culture, and personal experience through poetry.
A special moment came when three students were awarded copies of Jay’s anthology, Homecoming, in recognition of their outstanding effort and creativity.
We were delighted to host Jay and are hopeful that we can welcome him back soon—not only to continue inspiring our young writers but also to collaborate with our music department on future creative projects.
It was a truly memorable visit that left our students buzzing with ideas and enthusiasm.
