Mobile Phones, AirPods and Electronic Devices

Mobile Phones, AirPods and Electronic Devices

Students are discouraged from bringing mobile phones to the Academy. Evidence-based research suggests that the majority of bullying and cyber bullying incidents are due to the use of social media via mobile phones and electronic gadgets. Mobile phones and electronic gadgets are a serious distraction to students’ learning and progress. As such, mobile phones should never be seen or heard in the academy buildings.

  • If parents want their child to bring a phone to school for safety reasons, they must be switched off and kept in their school bag. Mobile phones, AirPods etc., cannot be kept in blazer or shirt pockets.
  • If a member of staff sees a mobile phone or hears a notification in any area of the academy building, including corridors, dining spaces, stairwells etc. the mobile phone will be confiscated.
  • In the first instance, the incident will be logged on Arbor, parents will be informed and the phone will be handed back to the student at the end of the day.
  • AirPods or any other electronic devices should not be seen or heard in the academy buildings and should be kept in students’ school bag.
  • If a member of staff sees an electronic device, AirPods etc. parents will be informed and items will be confiscated and handed back to the student at the end of the day.
  • Further incidents will require a parent/carer to come into school to collect confiscated items and sign an agreement form.

Mobile Phone Zones

  • Within the academy campus, there is a Mobile Phone Zone away from the academy buildings. If absolutely necessary, students can turn their phone on in the designated area during break or lunch time only.
  • The Mobile Phone Zone is clearly marked out.
  • Students should ensure their mobile phone is switched off and put back into their school bag before crossing the painted line.
  • If a mobile phone is seen outside of the zone, the incident will be dealt with in line with policy above.

Filming/Photographs of Students

  • If a student is found to have filmed or photographed a member of the MEA community, it will be treated as a serious incident.
